What is the difference between A321XLR and A321neo? ›

The Xtra Long Range capability of the A321XLR starts with the engine and aerodynamic improvements introduced on the A321neo. A higher Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) combined with additional fuel capacity offers the A321XLR the unique capability to fly up to 4,700nm.

The A321neo has the same length as the original A321ceo but includes structural strengthening in the landing gear and wing, increased wing loading and other minor modifications in order to higher Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW). Its first customer was ILFC.

The lengthened A321neo prototype made its first flight on 9 February 2016. It received its type certification on 15 December 2016. The first entered service in May 2017 with Virgin America.

One of the latest additions to the fleet, the A321neo LR facilitates long range routes of up to 7400km or 4000nm. This aircraft is ideally positioned in the Aer Lingus fleet to serve both transatlantic and European routes.

All while burning 30% less fuel per seat than previous generation competitor aircraft, at roughly half the trip cost of modern widebodies. This versatility explains why Airbus has received more than 550 orders so far, from over 25 customers! Simply put, the A321XLR is a network extender.

The A321XLR is the newest member of the A320 Family, providing an Xtra Long Range. With a flight time of up to 11 hours and a range of up to 4,700nm, the A321XLR has the capability to connect distant destinations such as New York to Rome, London to Vancouver, Delhi to London, Sydney to Kuala Lumpur.

The A321XLR can cross the North Pacific

One of the most easterly major airports on the western side of the North Pacific is Tokyo Narita. If an optimally loaded and configured A321XLR took off from Tokyo, around half of the North American landmass is within the plane's range.

The addition of "neo" stands for "New Engine Option". The aircraft is 15 percent more fuel efficient than today's comparable models.

A321neo - 240 passengers in an all-economy configuration up to a range of 4,000 nautical miles. A321LR - 220 passengers in an all-economy configuration to a range of 4,000 nautical miles, although some variants or passenger configurations can extend that range up to around 4,500 nautical miles.
